OUTDOOR is a technical pair of mountaineering sunglasses developed for hiking, trekking, ski touring and demanding high-altitude use. Its distinctive feature is the combination of a photochromic Category 2–4 lens, a polarized filter and a mirrored outer treatment. The lens adapts as UV exposure changes, while polarization helps reduce reflected glare from highly reflective surfaces such as snow and wet terrain. A lightweight TR90 frame, removable sweat sponge, elastic retaining cord and Base 8 wraparound geometry complete a configuration designed for changing mountain conditions.

Technical Eyewear for Changing Mountain Conditions
Mountain routes rarely offer constant light. A trek may move between shaded forest, exposed paths, snowfields and high-altitude terrain within the same outing. OUTDOOR is designed around this type of variability, combining several lens technologies in one technical configuration rather than relying on a fixed tint.
The photochromic lens begins at Category 2 and progressively darkens according to UV exposure, reaching Category 4 under suitable high-UV conditions. This allows the eyewear to remain useful across a broader range of mountain light conditions than a conventional permanently dark Category 4 lens.
The strongly curved Base 8 geometry creates the wraparound shape typical of performance mountain eyewear, while the removable lateral protection and sweat sponge help manage exposure around the eye area during demanding outdoor use.
Photochromic, Polarized and Mirrored in a Single Mountain Lens
The OUTDOOR lens combines three distinct technologies, each with a different function. Understanding the difference is important when choosing technical mountaineering sunglasses.
Photochromic Category 2–4
The lens responds to UV exposure by changing its level of darkness. It starts from a smoke Category 2 tint and can progressively reach Category 4 under suitable UV and light conditions.
Polarized Filter
Polarization helps reduce reflected glare from surfaces such as snow, water and wet ground, supporting more comfortable vision in highly reflective outdoor environments.
Mirrored Outer Surface
The mirrored finish adds an additional reflective surface treatment to the lens and gives OUTDOOR its distinctive technical mountain appearance.
UV400 Protection
UV400 protection is designed to filter ultraviolet radiation up to 400 nm, covering UVA and UVB wavelengths encountered during outdoor exposure.
Important: when the photochromic lens reaches Category 4 darkness, it is intended
for extremely bright outdoor conditions such as high-altitude mountain environments.
Category 4 lenses are not suitable for driving.
Adaptive protection
How the Category 2–4 Photochromic Lens Works
At its lighter state, the OUTDOOR lens has a smoke Category 2 tint. This makes it suitable for conditions where a permanently dark Category 4 lens could be unnecessarily restrictive, such as shaded stretches of a trail or periods of reduced light.
As UV exposure increases, the lens progressively darkens. Under suitable conditions it can reach Category 4, a filter category designed for exceptionally intense sunlight and high levels of solar radiation such as those encountered in demanding mountain environments.
When UV exposure decreases, the process reverses and the lens gradually returns towards its lighter state. This adaptive behaviour makes OUTDOOR particularly suited to routes where altitude, weather, orientation and surrounding terrain can produce substantial changes in brightness during the same activity.
Reflected glare control
Polarized Lenses for Snow, Water and Reflective Terrain
Bright mountain environments can generate significant reflected light. Snow, wet rock, water and other reflective surfaces can create glare that is tiring during prolonged outdoor activity.
The polarized filter in the OUTDOOR lens is designed to reduce a substantial part of this reflected glare. The practical benefit is greater visual comfort and easier perception of terrain details when reflections would otherwise interfere with the view.
Polarization and UV protection perform different functions. The polarized filter manages reflected glare, while the sunglasses' UV400 protection provides the stated protection against UVA and UVB wavelengths.
TR90 Frame and Polycarbonate Lenses
TR90 Ultralight Frame
The frame is made from TR90 Ultralight, a material widely suited to active eyewear because of its combination of low weight and flexibility.
OUTDOOR weighs approximately 40 grams including the elastic cord and sweat sponge, helping keep the complete mountain configuration manageable during prolonged use.
Polycarbonate Lenses
The lenses are manufactured from polycarbonate, a material particularly suitable for sports eyewear thanks to its low weight and impact resistance.
Compared with more brittle lens materials, polycarbonate has a high resistance to fragmentation, making it appropriate for dynamic outdoor activities where eyewear may be exposed to accidental impacts.
Fit and protection
Wraparound Base 8 Geometry with Removable Protection
OUTDOOR uses a Base 8 lens curvature, creating a strongly wrapped sports profile. This geometry provides the close-to-the-face shape expected from technical outdoor eyewear and contributes to peripheral coverage.
Soft Megol rubber components help improve grip and stability during movement. The model also incorporates removable side components that can provide additional lateral shielding from light and wind when conditions require it.
A removable sweat sponge adds another layer of protection around the frame. It can help limit sweat reaching the eye area and reduce peripheral light entry during demanding mountain activity, while remaining removable when a more open configuration is preferred.
The supplied adjustable elastic cord provides additional retention during technical sections or movement-intensive activities.
Designed for Mountain and High-Altitude Use
The combination of adaptive Category 2–4 filtration, polarization, wraparound coverage and removable protective components makes OUTDOOR particularly suited to mountain environments with strong or frequently changing light.
