Punta Giordani: one stage in a broader acclimatisation process
Punta Giordani in the Monte Rosa massif was not the preparation climb for Mont Blanc. It was one of several days at altitude within Andrea and Paolo’s broader, progressive programme. The distinction matters. One outing above 4,000 metres cannot guarantee adequate acclimatisation and should never be presented as a shortcut. Adaptation is individual, requires gradual exposure and can diminish as time passes. A person may also respond differently on two apparently similar days. Within the complete programme, however, Punta Giordani had practical value: it offered a check of fitness, equipment, the body’s response and the technical routines that would need to remain dependable on a much longer route.
An acclimatisation outing is therefore useful when it provides information rather than false reassurance. How did sleep change at altitude? Was the pace sustainable? Did appetite disappear? Did a headache improve with rest or become worse? Could both climbers eat and drink while wearing gloves? Were their steps still precise late in the day? The answers should guide the next decision, not be edited to fit a fixed plan.
Equipment testing is equally important. A boot that creates pressure, a glove that is hard to put on, an unstable backpack adjustment or eyewear that performs poorly as the light changes may seem minor during a short trial. Over a very long ascent, at night and in low temperatures, every small inefficiency consumes attention. Testing the exact system before the decisive day makes it possible to correct, simplify and organise.
Pace also needs to be tested. On Mont Blanc, speed is not the same as haste. An aggressive effort in the first hours may demand repayment when altitude rises. Yet moving far too slowly can increase exposure and disrupt the schedule established by the guide. Preparation helps a rope team identify a calm, economical speed that can be sustained while movements remain accurate.

It climbs toward the Col des Aiguilles Grises and the Piton des Italiens, then joins the upper world of the massif around the Dôme du Goûter, Col du Dôme and Vallot area. Written as a sequence of place names, the route can appear clean and orderly. On the mountain it is dynamic. Glaciers move. Snow bridges change. Tracks migrate or disappear. Wind can turn a technically uncomplicated slope into an exhausting test. Heat can transform the surface during the return. A route followed successfully a few days earlier is information, not a guarantee. The line must be judged again in the conditions of the day.
The official Rifugio Gonella website gives approximately eight hours as a reference for the ascent from the hut. That number should never be read as a promise or a target to chase. The real duration depends on acclimatisation, efficiency, snow, glacier conditions, route choice, temperature, wind, visibility and decisions made along the way. A strong team may need more time because the mountain demands caution; a fast schedule does not turn poor conditions into good ones.

Andrea’s account adds something a general route description cannot provide: the perspective of a climber returning to the same Italian line four years later, this time with his father. The geographical route may have had the same name, but its conditions and personal meaning were different. That distinction sits at the heart of the story.
The seemingly endless Miage Glacier and the arrival at Rifugio Gonella
Andrea uses one precise word for the approach to Gonella: endless. The Miage has a scale that distorts distance. On its debris-covered back, a point that appears close can take far longer to reach than expected. The landscape is magnificent, but it does not reward careless sightseeing. Sleep before a major summit day is often short and fragmented. Altitude, anticipation, unfamiliar sounds and an early alarm do not encourage normal rest. This is why the preparation built during previous weeks and months matters more than the quality of one night. A climber cannot recover in a few hours the endurance, technique or acclimatisation that was never developed.
For Andrea, the approach is not a scene to be shortened so the story can rush toward the photogenic summit. It is the opening act of the Italian normal route. Leaving the hut in darkness: when every action must already be familiar
Andrea and Paolo’s rope team left Rifugio Gonella at 00:50. At that hour, the mountain offers few broad visual references. There is the beam of the headlamp, the sound of steps, the guide’s instructions and the occasional light of another team. Cold reduces sensitivity in the hands, sleepiness can slow simple actions and the terrain demands immediate concentration.
Night starts in high mountains are not arranged for romance. They are usually planned to use the colder hours, when snow may be firmer and the team can reach upper sections within an appropriate schedule. Yet even this principle is conditional. A weak overnight freeze, exceptional heat, new snow, wind or visibility can change the plan. The departure time must belong to the route and current conditions, not to a ritual copied from another ascent.
Darkness exposes the quality of preparation. An item packed in the wrong place requires a stop. A glove that prevents precise handling becomes more than an inconvenience. A headlamp without sufficient power creates a serious problem. The same applies to vision. Climbers move from complete darkness through the blue-grey stages of dawn and eventually into intense reflected light. Eye protection has to be considered as part of that whole transition.

The benefit must be described accurately: a photochromic lens does not amplify light and never replaces a headlamp. Paolo used XLITE J with prescription lenses. For a climber who needs optical correction, seeing the next foot placement, distinguishing surface changes and reading more distant terrain are not optional comforts. The chosen solution must be properly centred, secure and tested with the actual helmet, hood, cord and layers. A configuration that feels acceptable in a shop may behave differently after hours of cold, wind and movement.
During the night the visible world contracts to a few metres. That limitation can make the total distance feel less oppressive: the summit does not need to be solved at once. The immediate task is to make the present step correctly, maintain the agreed pace, preserve rope discipline and report anything that changes. In this sense, darkness strips the climb down to its essentials.
As the hours pass, the first light changes both mood and workload. The contours of the glacier emerge, but so do the scale of the terrain and the distance still to travel. The transition can produce a surge of energy, yet it also brings increasing exposure to reflected light. Equipment that adapts successfully without demanding constant adjustment leaves more attention available for the mountain.

Crevasses and seracs on the Dôme Glacier
The Dôme Glacier is one of the passages that defines the character of the Italian route. Andrea remembers a tormented environment shaped by crevasses and seracs. In darkness, the glacier does not reveal its entire architecture. Its scale is perceived through changes in gradient, detours, snow bridges and the concentration required to follow a viable line.
A glacier is not fixed ground. It flows, fractures and changes. Open crevasses are only the visible portion of the problem; others may be concealed by snow. Movement demands a particular balance between continuity and caution. Repeated stops can increase exposure and allow the body to cool. Moving without precision raises the chance of error. Experience makes checks fluid without turning them into blind routine. That fluidity is built over time through supervised practice; it cannot be acquired from an online checklist on the evening before departure.
Fatigue grows as altitude increases. Breathing becomes harder and mental reserve can narrow. This is when a simple equipment system and clear communication become most valuable. Gloves, layers, pack, hydration and eye protection should perform their jobs without requiring constant correction. Any repeated irritation consumes some of the attention needed to observe terrain and follow instructions.
Andrea’s crevasses and seracs are not dramatic decorations added to make the story adventurous. They explain why climbing Mont Blanc via the Italian normal route remains serious alpinism. Sharp ridges, altitude and fatigue: the final movement toward the summit
Beyond the more complex part of the glacier, the ascent continues to gain height. Accelerating because the summit seems near can create a crisis at the exact moment precision is most important. The ridges add a psychological dimension. Space opens on either side, wind may strengthen and the difference between an accurate step and an absent-minded step becomes very clear. High-altitude perspective can be deceptive: a rise that looks like the top may reveal another distance beyond it. Desire cannot be allowed to change the quality of movement.
Then the light transforms the mountain. The enclosed darkness of the start gives way to the colours of dawn and finally to full illumination reflected by snow and ice. On the summit, Andrea and Paolo found the result of more than the preparation completed that June. In that moment, however, the exact number mattered less than the presence of two people: father and son had arrived together.
A summit photograph can hold cold, closed hoods, rope, glasses and goggles in one frame. It does not show comfort. It shows equipment being used inside the environment for which it was chosen. Andrea’s second ascent of the Italian route, four years later
June 2026 was not Andrea’s first ascent of Mont Blanc from Gonella. He had climbed the Italian normal route on 6 July 2022 with Rossano, the guide who accompanied him on that earlier journey. Returning to the same mountain by the same named route does not mean repeating the same experience. In mountaineering, no two days are identical.
The glacier changes, the snow changes and the track changes. The climber changes too. Across four years, Andrea accumulated other peaks, more nights in huts and more decisions at altitude. A section that absorbed all his technical attention in 2022 might be understood more calmly in 2026. At the same time, transformed terrain could create a new difficulty that made memory less useful.
The most important difference was the person on the rope. In 2022, the ascent was a goal shared with Rossano. In 2026, it became part of the story built with Paolo. The mountain carried the same name, but the meaning had changed. Previous experiences are not erased by later ones. They form layers through which a climber can measure not only improved ability, but a different way of seeing.
Returning creates a specific psychological risk: believing that the route is already known. Experience is valuable only while it remains separate from overconfidence. Remembering where the line passed four years earlier cannot justify ignoring present evidence. Equipment also gains meaning through comparison. Andrea reports that the Demon products used on both occasions proved comfortable and effective during demanding high-altitude use. Why protecting your eyes on Mont Blanc is part of the equipment system
Rope, harness, crampons, ice axe, carabiners, helmet and technical clothing are immediately associated with mountaineering. Eye protection is sometimes treated as an accessory, yet on snow and ice it performs an essential role. Ultraviolet radiation, reflected light, wind, cold and rapid changes in brightness can affect comfort, observation and ocular health.
Snow reflects a significant amount of light. At altitude, exposure can be intense even when the air is cold and the skin does not feel the heat associated with a summer beach. Clouds do not automatically remove the problem, because diffuse radiation and reflection remain. Waiting until the eyes feel painful or vision becomes difficult means reacting too late.
Photokeratitis, often called snow blindness, is a painful injury to the surface of the eye caused by excessive UV exposure. Symptoms may be delayed, appearing only after damage has occurred. Prevention therefore has to begin before discomfort. Suitable UV protection, coverage appropriate to the environment and a stable fit belong to the same planning process as gloves or sun protection for the skin.
The Italian normal route also contains an unusually broad light transition. A team may leave in complete darkness, cross the first light of dawn and continue into powerful illumination on a highly reflective surface. A deeply tinted fixed lens can be impractical during the earliest phase. A lens that remains too light in bright conditions may fail to provide the required luminous comfort. Photochromic lenses are designed to alter light transmission within a declared range in response to activation.
Photochromic performance should never be presented as instant, unlimited or identical in every environment. It depends on the lens technology, ultraviolet exposure, temperature and time available for adaptation. A category 1–3 product works within that range; it does not transform into category 4. For exceptionally bright glacier conditions or prolonged exposure, a higher category and greater coverage may be the appropriate choice. That evaluation should be made before the ascent, with reference to the forecast, intended use and individual light sensitivity.
Fit and compatibility matter just as much as the lens specification. Glasses that slide, press beneath a helmet or conflict with a hood demand repeated correction. A goggle may increase coverage from wind, but it needs to fit the face and manage ventilation. Prescription users need a solution that maintains stable, natural vision while looking from the surface directly in front of the boots to distant terrain.
Andrea expresses the principle simply: safety in the mountains includes protecting vision with suitable equipment. Glasses do not remove the hazards of a glacier. The spare needs to be genuinely usable, protected from damage and accessible without unpacking the entire bag. Redundancy is valuable when it protects a critical function; it is wasteful when it merely adds objects that do not solve a meaningful failure.

The images from the ascent show two different visual requirements inside the same rope team. The traverse follows a long ridge entirely at high altitude, combining sharp snow and ice sections with open slopes and rocky passages. It is beautiful, exposed and delicate.
