Another mental trap is trusting the track simply because others have passed before. A line of footprints does not prove that the route is safe for you. The previous person may have had crampons, better skill, better timing, more experience or simply more luck. Following frozen footprints can lead you into terrain where going back is harder than continuing, which is exactly the situation you want to avoid.

Group dynamics matter as well. If one person keeps going, others may follow even if they feel unsafe. Less experienced hikers may assume that the confident person knows what they are doing. The danger of microspikes is psychological. They can make a hiker feel safe beyond their real function. You go from “my boots are slipping” to “now I can continue,” but that conclusion may be wrong. Microspikes also need appropriate footwear. On very soft shoes they may move, twist or come off. They work best with structured hiking boots or sturdy winter footwear. You should also turn back when you have the equipment but not the experience. Carrying crampons and an ice axe does not mean you are obliged to use them.
