GRAVEL is a lightweight, single-lens model developed for hiking, trekking, mountaineering and ski mountaineering in changing light conditions. Its DCHROM® photochromic lens changes from Category 0 to Category 3, combining a transparent starting state for low-light environments with progressive darkening as UV exposure increases. The wide shield-style design provides generous coverage for outdoor use, while the 30-gram TR90 frame, adjustable nose pad and interchangeable lower rim are designed to support comfort and versatility during long days in the mountains.

Designed for Trails Where Light Never Stays the Same
Mountain environments can move quickly from open sunlight to woodland shade, cloud cover or low-light sections. GRAVEL is built around this reality. Instead of requiring the wearer to change lenses as conditions evolve, its photochromic lens automatically changes tint according to UV exposure.
The Category 0 starting point is particularly useful when visibility becomes more important than sun shading: early starts, shaded trails, dense woodland, overcast weather or the final stages of an excursion as daylight decreases. Under stronger sunlight, the lens progressively darkens towards Category 3, providing greater filtering for brighter conditions.
The result is a versatile pair of photochromic hiking sunglasses designed for users who regularly encounter mixed lighting during the same outing.
Wide Single-Lens Coverage
The shield-style lens creates broad frontal and peripheral coverage. On trails, this design helps shield the eye area from wind, airborne dust, insects and small debris, while preserving the open field of view expected from technical sports eyewear.
DCHROM® Photochromic Lens: Category 0 to Category 3
The defining feature of GRAVEL is its DCHROM® photochromic lens. Photochromic technology reacts to UV exposure: when exposure increases, the lens darkens; when exposure decreases, it returns towards a lighter state. This allows one lens to cover a considerably wider range of outdoor light conditions than a fixed-tint lens.
Category 0
The transparent starting state is designed for very low-light conditions,
shaded environments and situations where maximum lens transparency is useful.
Up to Category 3
As UV exposure increases, the lens darkens progressively to provide more
comfortable filtering in brighter outdoor conditions.
Because the change happens automatically, GRAVEL is especially useful on routes where light repeatedly changes between exposed sections and shade. Photochromic behaviour can also vary with environmental conditions, including temperature, so the exact degree and speed of darkening are not identical in every situation.
UV400 Protection Throughout the Photochromic Range
The GRAVEL lens provides UV400 protection. UV400 is designed to filter ultraviolet radiation up to 400 nm, covering both UVA and UVB wavelengths. This protection remains an important characteristic of the lens even when its visible tint is in the transparent Category 0 state.
Lens darkness and UV protection should not be confused: a lens does not need to appear dark in order to provide UV filtering. This is particularly relevant for a Category 0–3 photochromic lens, whose visible tint changes as outdoor conditions change.
Lightweight TR90 Construction for Active Mountain Use
TR90 Frame
GRAVEL uses an ultralight TR90 sports frame. TR90 is valued in technical eyewear for its low weight and flexibility, characteristics that suit dynamic outdoor use and help maintain comfort over longer periods.
30-Gram Weight
Despite the wide shield-style lens, the complete glasses weigh only 30 grams, helping reduce unnecessary load during long hikes, ascents and active mountain use.
Adjustable Nose Pad
The adjustable nose pad allows the contact point around the nose to be fine-tuned, helping the wearer optimise fit and stability during movement.
Interchangeable Lower Rim
The lower rim can be removed and changed, allowing GRAVEL to be configured with a more open visual appearance. An additional contrasting rim is supplied with the glasses.
Base 8 Wraparound Design
GRAVEL uses a Base 8 lens geometry, a strongly curved format commonly associated with wraparound sports eyewear. Combined with the large single-lens design, this creates broad coverage around the eye area and a close, technical profile suited to active outdoor use.
The frame measures 150 mm in width and 60 mm in height, with 120 mm temples. These dimensions give GRAVEL its characteristic wide shield shape while maintaining a lightweight overall construction.
Mountain Activities in Changing Light
For hiking and trekking, the Category 0–3 range is especially useful on routes that alternate between exposed terrain and woodland or shaded sections. For mountaineering and ski mountaineering, the same adaptive behaviour helps manage normal variations in mountain light without requiring a manual lens change.
Important: the maximum tint is Category 3. For environments requiring
Category 4 protection because of exceptionally intense solar radiation, a dedicated
Category 4 model should be considered instead.
