PLANET Photochromic Mountaineering Sunglasses
Category 2–4 photochromic lenses, removable side protection and a lightweight TR90 frame for changing mountain conditions.
The PLANET photochromic mountaineering sunglasses are designed for hiking, mountaineering and ski mountaineering, where light conditions can change significantly during the same outing. Their Category 2–4 photochromic lenses adapt according to UV exposure, moving from a lighter Category 2 tint toward Category 4 protection as solar radiation becomes more intense.
Removable side shields provide additional lateral coverage when required, while the adjustable nose pad and lightweight TR90 frame help create a stable, comfortable fit during prolonged mountain use. The result is a technical model that can be configured for demanding high-altitude environments as well as less exposed trekking routes.

Adaptive Eyewear for Changing Mountain Environments
Mountain conditions rarely remain constant. A route can move from exposed ridges and snowfields into shaded rock faces, forest sections or areas where direct sunlight is temporarily reduced. PLANET addresses these changes through a single photochromic lens system rather than a fixed Category 4 tint.
Its lens starts at Category 2 and progressively darkens with increased UV exposure, reaching Category 4 in very intense light. This wider photochromic range makes the model particularly suited to activities where light intensity can vary considerably during the day.
Why Category 2–4?
A fixed Category 4 lens is designed for extremely bright conditions but can feel too dark when the route enters lower-light areas. PLANET's photochromic system provides a broader operating range, allowing the lens tint to respond to changing UV exposure.
Lens technology
Photochromic Category 2–4 Lenses
PLANET uses Category 2–4 photochromic lenses developed for mountain environments with substantial variations in sunlight and UV exposure. In moderate conditions the lens remains at a lighter Category 2 level. As UV exposure increases, the photochromic technology progressively darkens the lens and can reach Category 4 in extremely bright conditions.
This adaptive behaviour is particularly useful during mountaineering and ski mountaineering, where altitude, snow, cloud cover, shade and exposure can change throughout the route. The wearer can therefore use the same lens across a wider range of light conditions without relying on a permanently dark tint.
Because Category 4 represents a very dark level of sun protection intended for extremely bright environments, Category 4 lenses are not suitable for driving.

Polycarbonate Lenses with UV400 Protection
The PLANET lenses are made from polycarbonate, a material widely used in sports eyewear because it combines low weight with strong resistance to impact and fragmentation. These characteristics are particularly relevant for dynamic outdoor activities where eyewear must remain comfortable while coping with active use.
The lenses also feature a scratch-resistant treatment intended to improve resistance to everyday surface wear. As with any technical lens, appropriate cleaning and storage remain important for preserving optical quality over time.
UV400 Protection
UV400 protection is designed to filter ultraviolet radiation up to 400 nm, covering UVA and UVB wavelengths. This is especially important in mountain environments, where solar radiation can be particularly intense.
Removable Side Shields for Additional Lateral Coverage
One of PLANET's defining features is its removable side protection. The shields extend coverage around the outer sides of the frame, helping reduce peripheral exposure to intense light when travelling through highly exposed mountain environments.
When this additional coverage is not required, the side pieces can be removed, giving the eyewear a more open configuration for trekking, hiking and less exposed outdoor situations. This modular construction makes PLANET adaptable to different types of mountain activity without changing the main frame.
Lightweight TR90 Frame with Adjustable Nose Pad
The frame is made from TR90, a lightweight and flexible material well suited to technical sports eyewear. Its ability to flex under mechanical stress helps support comfort and durability during active use while keeping the overall weight of the glasses to approximately 35 grams.
The adjustable nose pad allows the contact points around the nose to be fine-tuned. This helps improve positioning and stability, particularly during movement or extended periods of wear.
Base 8 Geometry
PLANET uses a Base 8 lens curvature, a strongly curved geometry commonly used in wraparound sports eyewear. This shape contributes to the close-fitting profile required for technical mountain use.
