A technical circular course through the mountains of Villacidro

The Villacidro Skyrace follows a circular 21-kilometer route that starts in the historic center and climbs rapidly toward the surrounding mountains. With more than 1,900 meters of positive elevation gain, the race is a demanding test of climbing strength, downhill confidence and mountain running technique.

Start

Historic Villacidro to Castangias Park

The race begins in Piazza Giuseppe Dessì, where runners move through the narrow streets and alleys of the town center. After roughly 700 meters, near the rural church of Madonna del Carmelo, the route leaves the urban environment and heads toward Castangias Park, crossing pine forests that lead toward the trailhead of Monte Omu.

Climb 1

Monte Omu: the first major ascent

The first major challenge is the ascent of Monte Omu, a demanding climb of about 1.3 kilometers with approximately 600 meters of elevation gain. At the summit, runners are rewarded with panoramic ridge views before entering a technical, rocky north-facing descent.

Km 8

Coxinas Dam and the first refreshment point

Around the eighth kilometer, the route reaches the Coxinas Dam, where the first refreshment point offers support and a chance to refuel. From here, the trail follows the gravel basin bottom before a narrow path introduces the climb toward Monte Margiani.

860 m

Monte Margiani and the panoramic ridge

The ascent to Monte Margiani becomes increasingly steep and crosses rock-strewn terrain that demands careful foot placement. At the summit, 860 meters above sea level, runners enter a three-kilometer ridge section with a mix of faster grassy stretches and technical passages through holm oaks.

High point

Santu Miali: the highest point of the race

At around the 13th kilometer, the final refreshment point prepares runners for the ascent to Santu Miali, 1,062 meters above sea level. The climb begins in dense forest and gradually opens toward rounded peaks, panoramic views and the scent of wild thyme across the plateau.

Finish

The descent back to Villacidro

After Santu Miali, the final six kilometers are mostly downhill. The descent moves through forested paths, bends, open sections and familiar trails before returning through the pine forest and back into the town center, where the finish line welcomes runners with applause and celebration.

Why this race is demanding

The Villacidro Skyrace is not defined only by distance. Its real difficulty comes from elevation gain, repeated changes in rhythm, technical ground and the concentration required during rocky descents.

Physical challenge

The climbs require strong legs, controlled breathing and efficient pacing. The elevation gain is significant for a 21K route, so runners should avoid starting too aggressively and conserve energy for the final ascent.

Technical challenge

Rocky sections, narrow paths and downhill passages demand balance, foot precision and focus. Trail shoes with reliable grip and good lateral support are highly recommended.

Practical race mindset: this course rewards runners who can switch between climbing rhythm, technical control and fast movement on ridges. It is a race to manage intelligently, not only to run hard.

What makes the Villacidro Skyrace memorable

Beyond the competitive side, the race offers a complete mountain experience. The route captures the spirit of skyrunning while showing the natural and cultural character of Sardinia’s inland landscapes.

  • Technical climbs and descents that test strength, control and endurance.

Why running glasses matter on this route

On a technical mountain course like the Villacidro Skyrace, visibility and eye protection can influence comfort and confidence. Runners move through changing light conditions, from shaded forest sections to bright exposed ridges, while also facing wind, dust, insects and reflected sunlight from rocks.

Prescription running glasses for road running and trail running

Clear vision for steep climbs and fast descents

A good pair of running glasses should remain stable, protect the eyes and help maintain visual clarity when the terrain changes quickly. For trail running, lightweight frames, secure fit and lenses suited to variable light are especially important.

How to approach the Villacidro Skyrace

This race is best prepared with a balanced mix of climbing endurance, downhill technique and time on uneven ground. A runner who is fit on flat roads may still find the course demanding if they are not used to steep trails and technical descents.
