Food is only one part of the morning plan. Fluids influence comfort, temperature regulation and the ability to consume carbohydrate during a long event. The aim is to begin appropriately hydrated without forcing so much liquid that your stomach feels full, bathroom stops multiply or body mass rises because you have overdrunk.
Drink to arrive prepared, not waterlogged
Start with normal hydration during the previous day, then drink gradually with breakfast and according to thirst, climate and your individual needs. Does breakfast need extra sodium?

Lactose and gluten require different reasoning
If you have diagnosed celiac disease, gluten must be avoided and cross-contamination managed according to your medical guidance. If lactose intolerance has been established, choose tested lactose-free products. In the absence of a diagnosis or a clear symptom pattern, removing gluten or lactose the day before a race does not guarantee better digestion. It may simply remove familiar carbohydrate foods and make travel more complicated.
Low-FODMAP can be targeted, but should not become random restriction
Some runners with recurrent symptoms may benefit from temporarily reducing fermentable carbohydrates, but individual triggers differ and a complete low-FODMAP diet is restrictive. Honey, certain fruits, lactose-containing milk, polyols and other foods may be problematic for one athlete and perfectly comfortable for another. Anxiety and bowel routine matter
Pre-race nerves can increase intestinal motility. Keep the meal time and portion familiar, allow enough bathroom time and resist doubling coffee in an attempt to force a routine. Do not interpret every sensation as evidence that the race is already going wrong; hyper-focusing on the stomach can amplify discomfort. 1. Copying an elite runner’s breakfast
An elite athlete has a different body mass, pace, routine, support team and race strategy. Use sound principles to build your own portion instead of reproducing a social-media photograph.
2. Believing more carbohydrate always means a better race
The dose must be digestible. Exceeding your tolerance creates fullness and may prevent you from following the in-race plan. The upper end of the range needs training just like race pace.
3. Trying to complete all fueling at breakfast
For marathons and long events, carbohydrate availability is built through the previous days and maintained during the race. One huge morning meal cannot replace either phase.
4. Choosing wholegrain food only because it is normally healthier

Test 1: basic tolerance
Choose one of the ten options and eat it before an easy long run. Record the exact food, amount and time. Check hunger, fullness, reflux, nausea, urgency and practical preparation. Do not increase the portion yet; the first objective is to establish a comfortable base.
Test 2: target quantity
Calculate the intended range for your body mass and race, then move toward it by increasing one familiar source. If the base menu supplies 100 g and you want 140 g, add toast and honey or more cream of rice instead of introducing three new foods. Preserve the same digestion window you expect on race day.
