Photochromic lenses for all conditionsone of light during sport

For all athletes, constant research into materials and new technologies for clothing and accessories is essential to make the practice of their favorite sport more enjoyable and to enhance performance. Choosing a photochromic lens means opting for the best technology currently available on the market for lenses.

Photochromic lenses are designed to darken when exposed to UV radiation or sunlight through a reversible chemical reaction. Once the light exposure decreases or disappears, the lenses gradually return to their original transparent state.

Photochromic lenses can be used for all types of sports, both outdoor and indoor. For indoor environments (e.g., inside a tennis court), the lens protects the eyes from artificial light and any obstacles that could impact the face. They can also serve as prescription lens holders in sports requiring vision correction. Outdoors, these lenses adapt dynamically, lightening and darkening with every change in lighting conditions. Photochromic lenses are recommended for all sports because they allow athletes to use a single pair of glasses for all light and weather conditions.

All photochromic lenses in the DEMON line are made of high-quality, shatterproof polycarbonate. There are key features to consider when choosing your new sports glasses. This article focuses on the lens-specific characteristics:

SHATTERPROOF LENSES: When choosing sports glasses, shatterproof lenses are essential for eye safety. Unexpected or accidental impacts are common during sports, so selecting unbreakable polycarbonate lenses is crucial. In case of an accidental impact, the polycarbonate lens distributes the force across the entire surface, preventing small fragments from forming and potentially damaging the eyes. Instead, the lens forms a cobweb-like pattern that invalidates it without harming the user. Polycarbonate is widely recognized as the safest material for sports glasses.

DECENTRALIZED AND OPTICALLY PERFECT LENSES: Decentralized, optically perfect lenses offer clear vision with excellent depth perception, allowing athletes to precisely judge distances. This feature enhances performance in challenging conditions, where even minor depth distortions or blurry points can negatively impact performance and cause discomfort or a sense of dizziness. Using lenses with perfect optics leads to better results in technical maneuvers.

LIGHTNESS: Polycarbonate, besides being highly impact-resistant, is also the lightest material available for lenses. The best sports glasses are the ones you forget you’re wearing, which is why polycarbonate is used to create ultra-lightweight eyewear.

DEMON offers three types of photochromic lenses, differentiated mainly by their base color and the protection category they achieve:

» SMOKE PHOTOCHROMIC LENS: Starts from Category 1 and darkens up to Category 2.5. This lens is completely transparent at the start, making it suitable for indoor use as a simple shield against artificial light reflections. For glasses with optical clips, it provides vision protection as well.

For outdoor sports, this lens is particularly recommended for running and mountain biking. It can be used for night outings, early mornings, and late afternoons. Its transitions allow for constant adaptation in areas with low light, such as dense forests, tunnels, and shaded sections of the path.

» DCHROM: Starts from Category 1 and darkens up to Category 3. The lens initially has a light smoke-colored tint and can be used for any outdoor sport.

Compared to the photochromic smoke lens, the DCHROM lens is not suitable for night use because the light tint may appear too dark in low artificial lighting conditions.

» SMOKE 2-4: Starts from Category 2 and reaches Category 4 in the maximum work phase. It is important to note that Category 4 is generally reached in high mountain zones with very strong sunlight and intense UV radiation.

This particular photochromic lens is designed for mountaineering and hiking but can be used as a normal lens at lower altitudes by individuals who are particularly sensitive to light. Due to its ability to darken more than standard sunglasses in very bright sunlight, it offers enhanced protection.
