Why are these requirements so important?
We will now explain the 4 fundamental requirements on which DEMON’s design and creation of MTB sunglasses is based:
- PERFECT VISION DURING CHANGES OF LIGHT: The Mountain Bike is characterized by continuous light / dark light changes and vice versa. Entering the tunnel, woodland area, or a simple area of hilly or mountainous shade can force the rider to slow down or in the most extreme cases stop for a few seconds his activity caused by the difficulty in seeing his own path, road or path. Having to slow down or temporarily interrupt your performance as well as make the rider nervous, can limit the pleasure of your ride.

Which are the most suitable lenses for maximum performance and safety?
Photochromic lenses. These special lenses are the most appreciated and suitable for those who practice this discipline. They are made of top-quality polycarbonate, decentralized and optically perfect. Polycarbonate is the most effective material in constructing the lenses of MTB sunglasses because it is an unbreakable material (another fundamental aspect that we will then explain) and guarantees maximum protection and resistance to impacts (leaves, branches, stones, insects, etc.).
Photometric lenses are special lenses that, when exposed to UV radiation or sunlight in general, start a reversible chemical reaction and darken. Once the radiation of light disappears, the lenses gradually return to the initial state of transparency. Specifically, therefore, when entering a shaded area (tunnel or forest area, even very thick), in the absence of light irradiation, the lens returns to the color it is not working in, providing protection from air and projections, while leaving the shadow area will return to the chemical process by darkening the lens, limiting the glare of light coming out of the shadow.
This special dynamic lens that constantly adapts to any variation in the path’s light provides the athlete with the perfect and constant view of the course.
There are 2 different photochromic lens technologies for the MTB eyewear line, which differ substantially according to the specific needs of the Rider, exponentially increasing performance and safety:
- DCHROM Photochromic Lens: It is the evolution of the photochromic lens; it has a slightly darker base color than the other photochromic lenses in order to reach category 3 (dark sunglasses with mirrored lenses) during maximum work. In addition to the remarkable speed of clear dark change, they will surprise you for the remarkable sense of relaxation that they can provide to your eyes, even on days with strong solar radiation.
This type of lens is particularly recommended for rider who practice many wooded areas even if they are very thick but at the same time alternate the route in wide open spaces, where prolonged use of a clearer photochromic lens can be annoying.
However, it can be dark (in case of insufficient artificial lighting) for night practice, for which we recommend smoke photochromic lens.

Sunglasses lens variation for MTB
- Smoke Photochromic Lens: This photochromic lens differs from the DCHROM lens for coloring in the phase of maximum work of total transparency. Starts with the same chemical reaction that darkens the lens by solar irradiation. However, in addition to the lighter starting color, it has a lighter half tone during the maximum work phase. This special photochromic lens is particularly suitable for riders who face long areas of very dense woods, for those who often practice mountain biking at sunrise and sunset where the brightness is particularly poor, and especially for those who practice also many night excursions where it is necessary a completely transparent filter for protection from air, leaves, branches and dust.
For those who practice MTB and have these specific needs we recommend choosing this type of lens to avoid all those possible drawbacks deriving from a poor vision of the route.

- RESISTANCE TO IMPACT (Lenses): Another aspect considered fundamental in the design of MTB sunglasses is the choice of safe and unbreakable materials.
Mountain Bike is the cycling discipline that most needs safe and cutting-edge materials for the total protection of the rider. For the protection of the eyes, unbreakable polycarbonate lenses have been created that protect against accidental impacts, even very strong ones in a safe and effective way for the eyes.
The peculiarity of the polycarbonate lens of the lens mounted on all the MTB sunglasses has elasticity and resistance. In the event of a very strong impact, the lens distributes the shock throughout its entire surface, preventing the creation of small fragments that are harmful to the health of the eye, but creates a “spider web” effect that invalidates the lens. The use of polycarbonate allows to lighten the weight of the sunglasses for MTB, but at the same time exponentially increases the safety for the eyes of the rider.
In the following photos you will see the result of the test applied to the polycarbonate lens, struck strongly and repeated with a steel hammer to simulate very strong accidental impacts.
The lens has not suffered any breakage, and in some places, it has deformed to absorb the shock. Protecting the athlete’s eyes as best as possible is the pillar on which DEMON bases the creation of the lenses of all the sunglasses in the collection.
- IMPACT RESISTANCE (Frame): The frame of the MTB sunglasses is also impact-resistant, made of TR90, a special composition of Nylon and Carbon fiber that makes the sunglasses 20% lighter than conventional materials and more resistant to shocks accidental and mechanical traction. Nylon gives the sunglasses great elasticity and greater resistance. It is non-deformable at high and low temperatures and more durable over time.
- MAXIMUM SUNGLASS STABILITY: The TR90 performs a fundamental function for the stability of the sunglasses for MTB, in fact, wearing the sunglasses, this “widens” to effectively wrap the physiognomy of the head without tightening, to then return to the original shape not working.
Using a pair of sunglasses perfectly adherent to the face provides greater stability in the event of strong vibrations and abrupt and sudden movements typical of MTB. There are also rubber parts of the frame in soft Megol anti-slip to increase the stability of the sunglasses and prevent all those annoying micro slips.
